Vision Statement
Public Poetry exists to bring the public and the poetry community together, and to create a buzz about poetry.
Public Poetry collaborates with community partners to get as much good poetry out to the public as possible and to promote this art form. Public Poetry made its debut with a reading series of the same name, presented in partnership with The City of Houston/Houston Public Library. This Public Poetry series launched in April 2011 – National Poetry Month – with Houston Mayor Annise Parker reading one of her own poems! In September, Public Poetry received the Houston Press Best Of Award for Best Reading Series – 2011
Presented year round, the first Saturday of the month at various library locations, Public Poetry combines gorgeous language presented by award winning poets plus surprise guest appearances and short student readings, in a series of unique, innovative, fun, fast paced, family friendly events. Complete information about this monthly series is available on this site.
ARTlines is Public Poetry’s latest project in collaboration with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.(MFAH) This juried competition is based around nine works of art on display at the museum, and the winning poems will be will be shared with museum audiences in various ways, including an event at the MFAH on April 21, 2012.
