POEM OF THE WEEK

This old car is
a stalwart enigma.
The parts are elusive.
It’s hard to let go--dismiss,
like a best friend
or favorite blankie.
Poised on the showroom floor,
gleaming, glowing
beckoning, to buy
regardless of cost or budget.
“This car is you.”
The salesman touted and taunted
with manipulative trickery.
I bought it, brought it home
and twenty-five years later,
the mechanics sees her more
and I am jealous.

Sometimes I go drowning
The calendula on my window
Sill, pouring too much clear
Water into sopping dark soil because
I hesitate to touch the store-bought earth
Inside the sun-painted pot with my so-pristine
Finger, as if
I can't remove what I'm made of with one
Swift swipe
Of my hand across my jeans
Or whatever I've covered
Myself with, as if
I can't enjoy
This cool dampness on my utmost border, the part
Created to feel,
Momentarily
