We had a fine time with our Spring Series, which also encompassed our first anniversary. On that auspicious occasion, we celebrated in style with a repeat guest of honor, Mayor Annise Parker, reading lines she composed. She was followed by our four featured poets: Mike Alexander, Janet Lowery, The Fluent One (Jeremyah Payne) and Claire Kageyama-Ramakrishnan.
Public Poetry brings out an irrepressible spirit, epitomized by our WITS student, Pearl, who joined in this group shot with (L to R) poets Robin Reagler, (Fran Sanders, host), Jasminne Mendez, John Pluecker and Eric Ekstrand.
During this time, Public Poetry also jointly launched ARTlines with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This groundbreaking project with the museum is still ongoing. Wall labels for much of the artwork selected by the curatorial staff are now up, so come see what’s been done. Be sure to download the free gallery guide; it’s essential to locating these works. If Houston is outside your orbit of travel, this guide will also allow you to listen to the winning poets anywhere from your cell phone, with a central call in number and all the audio stops indicated. Text can be downloaded free here.
Our Summer Series starts July 7 with readings by Thay Alaffita, Stephen Gros, Jonathan Moody and Oscar C. Peña at McGovern-Stella Link Neighborhood Library, 7405 Stella Link, 77025. Get out of the heat and come join us there! To preview other poets in this series, click here.
